I decided to dive into the first run of waivers this year. Mostly because I find it all interesting, but also bc I think waivers in general, and especially the 1st waiver run, to be an important strategic element of this league.
Going into it I fully expected Juwaan Johnson, TE, NOS and Tony Jones, RB, NOS to be the first two selected in some order. Even more so after Niall (Joe Cooper) ended up with picks 1 and 3. I had no idea what to expect after that. My top 5, with 5th claim acquired from Corr (ANTIFA), was
1. Juwaan Johnson
2. Tyree Jackson
3. Tony Jones
4. Mohammed Sanu
5. Alec Ogetree
I definitely cared more about getting at least 1, hopefully 2, of those 5 far more than anyone else i put a claim on.
Some basic data points from reviewing the waiver report....
-16 out of 24 owners put in at least 1 claim. That's a pretty healthy number, but I also will never understand NOT putting in claims for initial period.
-There were 26 total players claimed across the 2 rounds. 14 in round 1, 12 in round 2.
-2 owners only submitted 1 name in round 1 and did not get the player. Matty (Woodlands) submitted for Juwaan Johnson at slot 19 and Brad (B-Rad) for Tony Jones at slot 6.
-9 of the 26 selections were the top choice submitted. That was very surprising to me.
-More surprisingly, 9 other picks out of 26 were the 2nd choice of the owner and that's with almost all of them being bc they put Tony Jones or Juwaan Johnson as 1st choice.
-All 26 picks were among the top 5 players submitted by the owner. Again, very surprising to me.
-Tony Jones Jr. was top choice for 10 of the 14 owners that submitted claims. That's interesting to me a couple ways. First, I'm almost certain that was driven by the news that Latavius Murray was cut less than 24hrs earlier. Months of news and camp reports and coming up with options, ranking them and then boom!..... the majority of owners have a new number 1 a day before waivers run. Tony Jones was not even on my claim list on Tuesday morning. I'm also surprised because I'm a monster Notre Dame fan and I would never have guessed Tony Jones Jr. would be an NFL player at all, let alone a guy that could ascend to an almost consensus top claim option.
-The other most often claimed players were Juwaan Johnson, Alec Ogletree, Mohammed Sanu, Tyree Jackson (less so), and Tyler Huntley (surprisingly, but also not actually claimed until last selection).
- The best value claim imo was Swanny (Lebowski) getting Trent Sherfield at 17. I was certain he was owned and certain I had checked that. I was wrong. He should've been heavily claimed imo. Only 3 owners put him in as far as I can tell. If I hadn't made the mistake of thinking he was owned he would've been my number 5 overall claim and bumped Ogletree to 6.
-Main takeaway is that if you spend some time to identify just 3-5 guys you want or need, you will probably get both of them if you take advantage of the waiver process.
