I would hope the draft is complete before we start free agency. Does the draft always take this long?

Sorry about holding up the draft. I was out camping with no internet.

No problem at all. I was just wondering if the draft always lasts this long is all. And I wanted to be sure free agency doesn't start before the draft is completed is all.

Well, we got started later than normal. Other than Brees, I thought most everybody did a pretty good job. However, FA is alive. There are only like 2-3 picks left.

The last 3 years before this one were all complete within 2 weeks... ranging from 10 - 14 days. This one was especially slow. Weekends are usually hit or miss, but the no-pick weekdays were something new this year.

Curious to see what you intend to do if the draft extends beyond the end of FA (ie - Bowbie doen't make his last pick until Thursday).

So you're prepared to unilaterally invalidate Bowbie' pick by allowing first year players to be taken off the draft board prior to the completion of the draft? That's disturbing.

Then call Bowbie and tell him he needs to pick if it disturbs you so. I have e-mailed him. Heck, I even offered a trade for the pick. Plus, if you are disturbed by who might be taken at 7.14, give me a break. Plus, it appears Sean Smith is the only player in question at the moment.

Honestly, why couldn't we have started FA in another week?
This has been an ongoing argument of mine since my first stint in the league. There's no reason to have the first FA session so early - just like there's no reason to put a timer on the draft. I'm not what I'd consider a slow drafter, but I don't begrudge those who are.
Let's absolutely finish one phase of the year before we start another one.
And we now have Smith and Underwood in question. If Bowbie wanted either of those guys - and he may not give a rat's ass - he has every right to draft them before they come up for bid.
What is the hurry?

Excellent! Point is moot now!

Excellent! Point is moot now! It is, but it probably ought to be addressed during this offseason so we don't have the same thing happen next season. It seems to me it comes down to prioritizing one of two matters: 1) We have to finish the draft relatively quickly so that we can accomodate the early June FA session, or 2) We have to modify FA so that the draft will be complete before it starts. If it is imperative that we have FA in early June, then we probably need to go to a timed draft - and know that we might lose owners if we do so. If it is imperative that we allow owners to complete their drafts with no time limit, then we need to move FA back - which might frustrate some owners but won't cause them to quit (I don't think). As for me, I'd much prefer allowing all owners to take what time they need to draft. It is the offseason, there are work and family conflicts at times, or guys simply need to do some homework - especially in the back half of the draft. I'd rather see FA start in the middle of June or later to accomodate that. And again, this is coming from someone who traditionally drafts pretty quickly and normally only is on the clock for a while when the pick slides to overnight. That does allow for some possible discourtesy for some owners who do not have conflicts and simply don't take enough interest in the league, but I'd rather give owners the benefit of the doubt - this is a pretty good bunch of guys. There's no hurry to get to the first FA session in my mind. The NFL is still in OTAs and training camp doesn't start until July 19 at the earliest this year. Let's push the June FA session back until the thrid Monday in June. That ought to give plenty of time to complete the rookie draft even at a very slow pace - seeing as the earliest FA would start in any given year would be June 15th. Just my thoughts, for what they are worth...

I agree, why not change it so the first free agency period ends the Monday after completion of the draft. Then have a second free agency period that starts when the current 3rd free agency period starts. Unless some owners think we need 3 free agency periods between the draft and the beginning of the season I think this is an excellent solution.
