The NFL schedule is out (finally). Here’s how it looks regarding byes and playoffs:
Weeks 1-5 are non-bye weeks
Weeks 6-14 have at least 2 teams on bye
Weeks 15-18 are non-bye weeks
How this affects us is the following:
We can still have our schedule of 2 games against division opponents and 1 game against every non-division opponent for a total of 19 games in the regular season.
The doubleheaders work out well since there need to be 5 doubleheader weeks to get to our 19 game schedule and there are 5 non-bye weeks. No one will have to be bye week shorted in any doubleheader game.
The backloaded bye weeks in the NFL schedule don’t work out quite so well since I have always been reluctant to play division games during bye weeks (which is why we had so many divisional doubleheaders early previously) and have tried to minimize bye week impact on those games. That’s virtually impossible now unless we were to load the first 5 weeks with divisional doubleheaders, which is even less desirable IMO.
Playoffs still work well since we can still have 3 non-bye playoff weeks and do not have to play on the last week of the NFL season when NFL teams can be sitting studs if their playoff position is locked in.

My initial thought on our upcoming schedule:
We need to play doubleheaders weeks 1-5. Make each of these weeks a DH where we have one divisional and one non-divisional opponent each. Then weeks 6-14 would be single games. Make two weeks in weeks 6-14 where the most NFL teams are on bye to be non-divisional single games (Week 7 definitely and then either Week 6, 9, 10, or 13 - guessing 9 or 10 would be best). Then let the rest of the single games be divisional games where there would be NFL byes. I would randomize TOCOL teams by number after the TOCOL schedule is set so there would be no bias in which of our teams would be impacted more unfavorably by having some of their studs on byes.
Playoffs would remain as-is but just move back one week.
I am wide open for any and all suggestions. Fire away.
